In high school softball yesterday, L’Anse won both of its games against Jeffers, 9-2 and 14-3.
In high school baseball yesterday…
– Calumet and Jeffers split their doubleheader. In the first game, the Copper Kings spotted the Jets seven runs in the top of the first inning, but came back to win the game 15-14. Jeffers claimed the nightcap 7-3. Justin Heinonen pitched the complete game for the win.
– L’Anse and Gogebic also split their doubleheader. The Purple Hornets won the opener 6-1, and the Miners took the second game 9-6.
– Houghton v Negaunee – not reported.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers broke their five-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins yesterday. Michael Fulmer struggled with his command, but battled into the sixth inning, giving up a run on four hits. Louis Coleman, Joe Jiménez and Shane Greene combined to allow just one hit in relief. Niko Goodrum hit a two-run homer, and also scored a run on a JaCoby Jones single.
The Tigers have today off, and host the Chicago White Sox tomorrow night. Mike Fiers will start against Reynaldo Lopez. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Milwaukee Brewers pounded the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-2 yesterday. The Crew sent 11 batters to the plate while scoring seven runs in the fourth inning. Travis Shaw’s three-run homer was the big blow. Tyler Saladino hit one out later in the game. Brent Suter pitched into the sixth, and earned the win. With their 31st win of the season, Milwaukee has set a new team mark for the best record through their first 50 games.
The Brewers begin a home set against the New York Mets tonight. Zach Davies will return from the disabled list to pitch against Steven Matz. Davies has been out with a sore rotator cuff.
Outfielder Ryan Braun is also expected to be back with the team tonight, after missing time with a sore back. To make room, Milwaukee sent pitcher Brandon Woodruff and outfielder Ji-Man Choi down to Colorado Springs.
NHL
The Washington Capitals advanced to the Stanley Cup final with a 4-0 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning last night. The Capitals won the Eastern Conference final 4-3. They’ll face the Golden Knights for the Stanley Cup beginning Monday night in Las Vegas.
NBA
In the NBA playoffs, Boston shut down Cleveland 96-83 last night. The Celtics lead the Eastern Conference final 3-2. Golden State plays at Houston tonight. The Western Conference final is tied 2-2.
Ride the Keweenaw
Ride the Keweenaw weekend opens with tomorrow with a ride or hike through the Adventure Mine at Greenland. On Saturday, there will be guided rides on the Tech, Churning Rapids and Swedetown Trails. Sunday’s activities are centered in Copper Harbor, and include the Lake Superior Gravity Series Enduro, along with Taste of the Harbor in the park that evening, Art Bike at the Harbor, and live music. The high school softball and baseball tournaments start next week. Our coverage will begin Tuesday, when Hancock faces Jeffers at the Boneyard in Lake Linden. The pregame show will start around 3:10 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
