Hancock Councilman Accused Of Not Living In The City

The residency of Hancock City Councilman Ted Belej is being called into question by another member of the council.

During the work session prior to the council’s regular meeting on Wednesday, Councilman John Haeussler brought the matter to the attention of the council, citing rumors and a sign placed by a resident accusing Belej of not living in the city of Hancock for the last year.

If true, Belej could be disqualified from continuing to serve on the council.

Haeussler also expressed his concern that the city could be subject to a lawsuit for having an unqualified member of the council voting on city matters.

On the city’s website, Belej’s address is listed as 100 Forest Street. Haeussler said he believes that to be the address of Belej’s mother and that the At Large Councilman lives outside the city limits.

It’s an accusation Belej denies.  “I don’t know where he is getting all this information from, but I don’t think he’s very accurate with what he’s got. We’ll just have to wait for the city attorney’s opinion and see what happens then,” said Belej.

When asked if he lives in the city of Hancock, Belej answered, “Yes, I do.”

Haeussler stopped short of formerly making a charge against Belej and the council decided to have the city attorney look into the matter and have an answer for them at their special meeting next Wednesday.
