Two of the three regional track and field competitions involving local teams will be held this afternoon…
– Houghton and Calumet will take part in the DI event at Negaunee.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Jeffers, Chassell and Baraga will take part in the DIII regional at Baraga.
– Hancock and L’Anse will compete at the DII regional in Iron Mountain tomorrow.
In high school golf, the Houghton, Hancock, Calumet, Lake Linden-Hubbell, and L’Anse boys will tee off at the Lakes Invitational at the Calumet course today.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers collected just five hits yesterday, as the fell to the Cleveland Indians 6-0. Ryan Carpenter was brought up from Toledo to start for Detroit. He struggled through five innings, and gave up all six Cleveland runs. Artie Lewicki was also brought up from Toledo before the game. He turned in four scoreless innings in relief.
The Tigers open a four-game series at Seattle tonight. Matthew Boyd will start against Marco Gonzales. Pregame coverage will begin at 9:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Outfielder JaCoby Jones left yesterday’s game with a bruised hip. The injury happened when he stepped awkwardly on first base while running out a ground-out in the first inning. He’s considered day-to-day. Leonys Martin should be able to return from the disabled list this weekend. He’s been nursing a sore hamstring.
The Milwaukee Brewers slugged four home runs, and defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-2 yesterday. Travis Shaw and Domingo Santana hit back-to-back shots in the first inning. Christian Yelich and Tyler Saladino homered later. Milwaukee starter Brandon Woodruff gave up a two-run homer in the first inning, then pitched through the fifth to earn the win.
The Brewers have today off, and begin an interleague set at Minnesota tomorrow night. Brent Suter will pitch against Kyle Gibson.
Ryan Braun was on the bench again last night, as he continues to experience back problems. After the game, he said there’s a good chance he’ll need time on the disabled list. Hernán Pérez has missed the last two games with a wrist problem, but is expected to be ready on Friday.
NHL
In the NHL playoffs last night, Las Vegas defeated Winnipeg 4-2. The Golden Knights lead the Western Conference final 2-1. Tampa Bay skates at Washington tonight. The Capitals lead the Eastern Conference final 2-1.
NBA
In the NBA playoffs, Houston defeated Golden State 126-105 to tie the Western Conference final 1-1.
MTU
Michigan Tech will host its fourth annual Spring Hockey Carnival tonight between 6:00 and 8:00 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The event is free and open to people of all ages. It will feature food, games for kids, door prizes, photo opportunities with the Jeff Sauer Trophy, and autographs with Huskies players and staff. Youth are encouraged to bring their own hockey sticks to play floor hockey with Tech players. The Huskies will also run skill sessions, which will include a chance to shoot against Tech goaltenders. Free hot dogs and sodas will be available while supplies last.
Horseshoes
Because of potential rain in the forecast, the Copper Country Horseshoe League tournament scheduled for Saturday at the Dreamland Bar has been pushed back to Sunday. Registration begins at noon, and competition will start at 1:00. You do not need to be a league member to take part. The entry fee is $10.00, and all money will be returned in prizes.
