In high school softball yesterday…
– Jeffers v Calumet – not reported.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell swept L’Anse, 14-11 and 13-9.

In high school baseball yesterday…
– Hancock v Calumet – not reported.
– Jeffers split its twin-bill with Gogebic. The Jets took the first game 6-3. Carson Turner pitched a complete game, struck out seven, walked just one, and gave up only four hits. Evan Larson and David Jukkala each had two hits for Jeffers. In the nightcap, the Jets were held to just three hits, and fell 13-1. Elias Rajala had two of the hits and scored the Jets’ only run.
– L’Anse took both ends of its doubleheader against Houghton, 14-6 and 3-2.

In golf, the Houghton girls took an easy team victory at the Bulldog Invitational at the Portage Lake Course yesterday. Kaaren Liston was the individual medalist, with an 82.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers scored five runs in the seventh inning, and came from behind to defeat the Cleveland Indians 9-8 last night. Cleveland got off to a quick start when Brandon Guyer hit a grand slam off Francisco Liriano in the first inning. Liriano gave up another run in the second, and pitched into the fifth. Cleveland added three more off Zac Reininger in the sixth. Detroit got early home runs from JaCoby Jones and Nicholas Castellanos. The big seventh inning was powered by RBI doubles from James McCann, Jones, and Pete Kozma. Daniel Stumpf worked his way out of a bases-loaded situation in the eighth, and Shane Greene earned the save.

The Tigers wrap up that series against the Indians this afternoon. Ryan Carpenter has been called up from Toledo to start for Detroit. Trevor Bauer will counter for Cleveland. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Pitcher Artie Lewicki has also been called up from Toledo for today’s game, as the Tigers cycle in some fresh arms. Reininger and infielder Dawel Lugo have been sent down to make room.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost 2-1 to the Arizona Diamondbacks last night. Jhoulys Chacín turned in a strong start, giving up a single run over seven innings. The D’Backs scored the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth. Travis Shaw doubled home Milwaukee’s only run in the fourth.

The Brewers conclude that series at Arizona this afternoon. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against Matt Koch.

NHL
In the NHL playoffs, Tampa Bay defeated Washington 4-2 last night. The Capitals lead the Eastern Conference final 2-1. Winnipeg skates at Las Vegas tonight. The Western Conference final is tied 1-1.

NBA
In the NBA playoffs last night, Boston defeated Cleveland 108-83. The Celtics lead the Eastern Conference final 2-0. Golden State tips off at Houston this evening. The Warriors lead the Western Conference final 1-0.

Trails
The Copper Harbor Trails Club has scheduled a second work day Saturday to help make sure the trails are ready to use for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. If you’d like to help, meet at 11:00 at the trailhead. If you have appropriate tools (rakes, shovels, saws, etc.), please bring them. Dress appropriately, and remember gloves, water and snacks.
