Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team fought its way to a third-place finish at the City University of New York Athletic Conference tournament yesterday. After splitting its first two games on Thursday, the Lions defeated Baruch College 8-3 yesterday.  Brandon Teichman earned the win, completing nine innings, allowing just two hits, and striking out eight. Brian Doyle had three hits. Last night, the Lions’ tournament run ended with a 19-11 loss to the College of Staten Island. FinnU drew first blood, with six runs in the second inning. The Dolphins came back, and put the game away with six runs in the sixth inning, and six more in the eighth. Joey Krug and Ben Loya homered for the Lions.

Rain pushed back the start of the American Collegiate Athletic Conference softball tournament in Canton, New York. Instead of opening play yesterday, the Finlandia University softball team will face the fourth-seeded and winless SUNY-Delhi Broncos this morning at 10:00. Maine-Presque Isle and host SUNY Canton will play at noon. If the Lions win their first game, they’ll take on the winner of the second game at 4:00. If they lose their first game, they’ll face the loser of the second contest at 2:00 in an elimination game in the double-elimination tournament. The event will conclude tomorrow.

Former Ishpeming High School standout Katie Loman has committed to playing basketball at Finlandia. Loman was named to the Mid-Peninsula Conference All-Defensive Team. Learn more about her here.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers lost 4-2 to the Kansas City Royals last night. The game was scoreless through the first seven innings. Detroit grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the eighth on an RBI double by JaCoby Jones. After throwing seven shutout innings, Tigers starter Francisco Liriano walked the first batter in the bottom of the eighth. The Royals then scored four times off Daniel Stumpf and Joe Jiménez to earn the win.

The Tigers continue that series in Kansas City this afternoon. Jordan Zimmermann will pitch against Jason Hammel. Pregame coverage will begin at 3:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit first baseman Miguel Cabrera has been placed on the disabled list. Cabrera strained a hamstring while running the bases Thursday. John Hicks will fill in at first base, and catcher Grayson Greiner has been called up from Toledo to back up James McCann. The Tigers also called up reliever Blaine Hardy, and sent reliever Chad Bell back to the Mud Hens.

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped a 6-4 decision to the Pittsburgh Pirates last night. Junior Guerra struggled with his control, and gave up five runs over five innings. Domingo Santana homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers host the Pirates again tonight. Jhoulys Chacin will pitch against Jameson Taillon.

Milwaukee has called up reliever Jorge López from Colorado Springs. He’ll fill the roster vacancy created when starter Zach Davies was placed on the disabled list with a sore rotator cuff.
