The Detroit Tigers’ scoring outage reached 22 consecutive innings last night, as they fell 6-0 to the Baltimore Orioles. Detroit collected just two hits. Mike Fiers turned in a quality start, allowing two runs over six innings, but took the tough loss.
The Tigers continue that series at Baltimore tonight. Francisco Liriano will pitch against Andrew Cashner. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit reliever Drew VerHagen cleared waivers yesterday, and was assigned to Toledo. He was designated for assignment early this week.
The Milwaukee Brewers suffered a tight 3-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs yesterday. Brent Suter gave up two runs in the first inning, then allowed no more through the fifth. Milwaukee scored a single run in the first. They tied the game in the top of the seventh on a long sacrifice fly by Christian Yelich (which might have been a grand slam home run except for a stiff wind blowing against it), only to see Chicago bring home the winning run on the bottom of the inning when shortstop Eric Sogard misplayed a ground ball.
The Brewers continue that series in Chicago this afternoon. Junior Guerra will pitch against Jose Quintana.
Milwaukee first baseman Eric Thames underwent surgery yesterday to repair a torn ligament in his thumb. He’ll need six to eight weeks to recover.
NHL
In the NHL playoffs last night, Winnipeg opened its second-round series with a 4-1 win at Nashville.

– Boston plays at Tampa Bay in the first game of their second-round set.
– San Jose skates at Las Vegas. The Golden Knights lead that series 1-0.
NBA
In the NBA playoffs last night…
– Toronto advanced to the second round with a 102-92 win over Washington. The Raptors won that series 4-2.
– Utah moved ahead with a 96-91 victory over Oklahoma City. The Jazz took that set 4-2.
– Indiana pounded Cleveland 121-87. That series is tied 3-3, and will be decided tomorrow afternoon.
Tonight…
– Milwaukee plays at Boston. That series is tied 3-3.
NFL
In Rounds Two and Three of the NFL Draft last night, the Detroit Lions moved up to take Auburn running back Kerryon Johnson with the 43rd overall pick; then selected Louisiana-Lafeyette safety Tracy Walker with pick number 82. Johnson rushed for 1,391 yards for the Tigers last season, and was named to the All-Southeastern Athletic Conference First Team.
The Green Bay Packers used the 45th overall pick to take Iowa cornerback Josh Jackson. They used the 88th pick to select Vanderbilt linebacker Oren Burks. Jackson led the nation with eight interceptions last season, and was a first-team Big Ten and AP All-American.
The draft will conclude with the final four rounds today. The Packers have eight selections, while the Lions have only two.
