High School
The Dollar Bay-Tamarack City boys basketball team’s tournament run ended last night, with a 71-32 loss to top-ranked Southfield Christian in the semifinals. The game was over almost before it started, as the Eagles flew out to an early lead, and built a 20-2 advantage early in the second quarter. The Blue Bolts responded, scoring 18 points in the second quarter, but were held to just a dozen in the second half, as the game finished with a running clock. Jaden Janke led Dollar Bay with 12 points. Jacob Iacono finished with nine. The Blue Bolts wrap up their campaign with a record of 26-1 – it’s the best season in school history.
MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team opens play at the NCAA tournament this afternoon. The Huskies are seeded fourth in the East Regional, and will take on top-seed Notre Dame at 3:00 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The game will be televised on ESPN 2. There will be a watch party at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena – doors will open at 2:45. The first 500 fans will receive free hot dogs and pop courtesy of Vollwerth’s. Providence and Clarkson meet in the other East Region semifinal.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball team finished play at the Cobber Classic with two extra-inning games at the West St. Paul Dome yesterday. In the first game, Kassandra Avila earned a complete-game win, and singled home the winning run in the ninth inning in a 3-2 victory over Concordia Moorhead. The Lions finished the Classic with a 12-inning, 15-14 loss to Bethany Lutheran.
The Finlandia baseball team split a doubleheader at the University of Northwestern in St. Paul yesterday. The Lions dropped the opener 3-0. Joey Krug gave up just one hit in that game – a three-run homer in the fourth. Aaron Froelich then scattered six hits over eight innings, as the Lions won the second contest 3-2. Froelich also drove home the winning run. Finlandia will play two more at the University of Northwestern this evening.
GLHL
The Great Lakes Hockey League tournament begins this morning at the Calumet Colosseum. The Portage Lake Pioneers open the action this morning at 8:00 against the Mosinee Papermakers. The Pioneers will wrap up pool play against the Marquette Mutineers this afternoon at 4:15. The Calumet Wolverines’ two pool games will be played tonight at 7:00 against the Monroe Blues, and tomorrow at 2:00 against the Fox Cities Ice Dogs. The semifinals will be played later tomorrow, and the championship match will face off Sunday at 1:00. Link to the tournament schedule here (note that the times listed are Central Time). NHL
The Detroit Red Wings dropped a 1-0 decision to the Washington Capitals last night. Jimmy Howard stopped 25 shots in net. The loss officially eliminated Detroit from playoff contention. The Wings skate at Toronto against the Maple Leafs tomorrow night. Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Wings will also finish the season without Mike Green. He’ll undergo neck surgery to repair damage caused by a hit earlier this season.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons suffered a 100-96 overtime loss to the Houston Rockets last night. Detroit made only six of 38 three-point attempts. Blake Griffin scored 21. The Pistons host the Chicago Bulls tomorrow night.
MLB
In spring training baseball, the Detroit Tigers defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 6-2 last night. Matthew Boyd pitched into the fifth inning, and gave up just one run. He was thrown out of the game after tossing an inside pitch to Odubel Herrera. The game was chippy after that, with two Philadelphia pitchers, manager Gabe Kapler, and a coach also earning ejections. Miguel Cabrera hit his second home run of the spring. The Tigers face the Atlanta Braves this afternoon
The Milwaukee Brewers edged the Kansas City Royals 1-0 yesterday. Zach Davies tossed five shutout innings. Brett Phillips’ solo home run provided the game’s only scoring. The Brewers will face the Chicago Cubs today.
