League Of Women Voters To Hold Public Meetings On Jail

The Copper Country League of Women Voters will be hosting a series of public input meetings before the county’s plans for a new jail addition move forward.

The League says the three public meetings are to address the issues of the inadequate Houghton County jail and the aging and cramped courthouse.

Calling these among the most important issues the electorate will face in the next year, the League says they are doing this in order to offer the public the chance to voice their views on these issues and to gather this feedback and present it to the Houghton County Board of Commissioners in time for the Board’s action on a facility design and millage.

The meetings are scheduled for

  • Monday, March 26th, 7:00 p.m., at the Laird Township Hall in Alston;
  • Tuesday April 3rd, 7:00 p.m. in Hancock Central High School Auditorium in Hancock; and
  • Thursday April 5th 5:30 p.m. at the CLK Schools Common Area in Calumet.

The meetings will be facilitated by members of the League.  Participants will be invited to complete a written survey and participate in a discussion.

For more information on the issues surrounding the jail/courthouse and to complete an online survey concerning these issues, please see the League’s website at lwvccmi.org. For more information, contact cclwvmi@gmail.com or call 906-483-2291.
