Houghton Police Step Up Presence In Local Schools

While lawmakers struggle to find ways to make students safer while at school, the Houghton Police Department is stepping up their own efforts.

In his report to the City Council on Wednesday, Police Chief John Donnelly said his department has increased their presence in the Houghton High School and Middle School.

The department has set up a satellite office at the school where officers can work out of and do their reports instead of coming back to the City Center.

Police officers are encouraged to take their lunch breaks at the elementary school as well.

Donnelly said although some departments can afford to have a liaison officer at the school, with only having eight police officers, his department is not able to do that.
