Emergency Notification System Available To Residents

Residents in Houghton County can now sign up for alerts in the event of an emergency with the new Mass Notification System.

Emergency Measures Director Chris Van Arsdale informed the County Board of Commissioners that all of the counties in the Upper Peninsula have joined the Rave Alert system.  The system will provide a phone call, email, or text message to residents who opt-in to the program.

Van Arsdale said people are not added automatically. They must go to the Emergency Measures section of the Houghton County website and sign up.

Participants will be given the option to volunteer additional information such as the number of people at the residence, if you have animals, well water, and if they have a generator or other alternative power source.  This information will help response teams in the case of an emergency.  Residents can also opt-in to receive weather alerts as well.

The alert system was funded by Homeland Security.
