Chassell Girls Head to State Semis – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
The Chassell girls basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the state tournament for the first time, with a 58-41 victory over Gaylord Saint Mary’s last night. The Panthers took control early, and led from start to finish. They will face Waterford Our Lady in the first Class D semifinal game tomorrow at 5:30 at Van Noord Arena at Calvin College in Grand Rapids. Adrian Lenawee Christian and Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart will play in the second semifinal game. Chassell High School continues to collect donations to help cover the cost of the trip. The high school basketball boys regional finals will be played tonight…
– In Class C at Marquette, Calumet will try for its first-ever regional title against Iron Mountain at 7:00. Our broadcast coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– In Class D at Negaunee, unbeaten Dollar Bay-Tamarack City will play Carney-Nadeau at 7:00.

MTU/NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team has captured two of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association’s top honors. Atte Tolvanen has been named the league’s Goaltender of the Year. Grant Potulny was named Coach of the Year for guiding the Wildcats to a second-place regular-season finish in his first year on the bench. Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan will play in the WCHA title game Saturday night in Marquette.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons’ struggles continued last night, with a 110-79 loss to the Utah Jazz. Utah scored 42 points in the first quarter. Luke Kennard scored 18 for Detroit. The Pistons play the Nuggets at Denver tomorrow night.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will visit the Los Angeles Kings tomorrow. Pregame coverage begins at 9:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB
In spring training baseball, the Detroit Tigers and the New York Yankees played to a 2-2 tie yesterday. Jordan Zimmermann pitched five scoreless innings, gave up just two hits, and struck out four. Leonys Martin homered. The Tigers have today off.

The Milwaukee Brewers edged the Texas Rangers 4-3 yesterday. Starter Brandon Woodruff gave up a run over four innings. Jesús Aguilar hit a home run. The Brewers take on the Chicago White Sox this afternoon.

NFL
The Green Bay Packers have released tight end Jordy Nelson. Nelson played 10 seasons in Green Bay, and is among the team leaders in receptions, and in several other categories. To replace Nelson, the Packers are set to sign free agent tight end Jimmy Graham, who spent the last three of his eight NFL seasons with the Seahawks. The NFL free agent signing window opens today. The Green Bay Packers have reportedly reached a deal with defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, who was cut by the New York Jets.

The Detroit Lions have re-signed safety Tavon Wilson and cornerback Nevin Lawson. They are reportedly ready to sign former Giants linebacker Devon Kennard, and former Bears linebacker Christian Jones.

CC Oldtimers
The Copper Country Oldtimers Hockey Tournament opens tomorrow, with games in multiple divisions scheduled for Dee Stadium, the Houghton County Arena, and the Calumet Colosseum. Spectators are encouraged. The schedule is posted on the Oldtimers Facebook Page.
