Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team split two narrow decisions in their doubleheader against Baruch College yesterday. The Lions collected just two hits, as they were blanked 1-0 in the opener. Aaron Froelich pitched a complete-game three-hitter as Finlandia took the second contest 2-1 in eight innings. The Lions concluded their Fort Myers trip with a record of 2-8.
The Finlandia softball team lost to Marian University 8-4 yesterday. The result of FinnU’s game against Rutgers-Newark was not reported. The Lions will conclude their Florida trip today, with games against Mount St. Joseph University, and Franklin and Marshall College.
MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech hockey team defeated Minnesota State 4-2 last night, to force a third and deciding game in their Western Collegiate Hockey Association tournament semifinal series. Justin Misiak gave the Huskies an early lead. MSU quickly tied the game, but Mark Auk put Tech back on top by the end of the first period. Former Houghton High School standout Raymond Brice scored the eventual game-winner midway through the second period, and Dylan Steman added an empty-netter with six seconds remaining. Game three of the series will be played in Mankato tonight.
Northern Michigan University and 17th-ranked Bowling Green State University will also play a third game in their WCHA semifinal series, after the Falcons edged the Wildcats 1-0 last night. The deciding game of that set will be played tonight in Marquette.

The result of the Portage Lake Pioneers’ game against the Monroe Blues last night was not reported.
The result of the Calumet Wolverines’ game against the Eagle River Falcons was also not reported.

In spring training baseball, Mike Fiers gave up five runs over three innings, as the Detroit Tigers lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3 yesterday. The Tigers face the Atlanta Braves this afternoon.
The Milwaukee Brewers blasted the Colorado Rockies 9-2 yesterday. Brent Suter pitched four shutout innings. Domingo Santana and prospect Nate Orf homered. The Brewers take on the Cleveland Indians this afternoon.

At the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association Bantam 14U B State Tournament at the Houghton County Arena, yesterday…
– Calumet Auto Pro completed a sweep of their Pool A games by defeating the Metro Junior Jets 11-4, and the Westland Storm 5-3.
– In Pool B, Copper Country American Forest Management pounded the Mount Pleasant Patriots 12-2, then skated to a 2-2 tie against the Lansing Senators. Their record of one win and two ties was good enough to advance them to the semifinals.
Today, Calumet Auto Pro will meet the Lansing Senators in the first semifinal at 10:00. Copper Country American Forest Management will face the Alpena Cougars in the second semifinal at 11:45. The championship game will be played at 5:15 this afternoon.

At the Great Bear Chase on the Swedetown Trails yesterday…
– Tad Elliott of Durango, Colorado won the 50k Skiathlon, finishing 93 seconds ahead of Matt Liebsch of Orono, Minnesota. Houghton’s Olav Vestal placed sixth. Deedra Irwin of Pulaski, Wisconsin, was the top women’s finisher.
– In the 50k Freestyle, Andy Dodds of Minneapolis earned the title, with a narrow five second win over Zachary Nelson of St. Paul. Stefan Hupperts of Houghton took sixth place. Jenny Beckman of Osseo, Minnesota, was the fastest woman.
– In the 50k Classic, Scott Nesvold of Bayfield, Wisconsin, outpaced Ironwood’s Jason Slining by 106 seconds to take the crown. Doug Oppliger from Houghton placed sixth. Erin Blow from Minocqua, Wisconsin, was the top woman’s finisher.
– In the 25k Freestyle, Tryg Solberg from White Bear Lake, Minnesota, was 18 seconds faster than Drake Hacker of Sussex, Wisconsin. Sarah Bezdicek from Plymouth, Minnesota, was the top women’s finisher. Calumet’s Jan Haase placed fifth in the women’s competition.
– In the 25k Classic, Thomas Olenchek of Brookfield, Wisconsin earned the crown, finishing 40 seconds better than Mark Scheller, of Champlin, Minnesota. Lauren Lackman of Wausau, Wisconsin, took the women’s title, with Hancock’s Joan Rundman in second place.
– In the 10k Freestyle, Tom Beyer of Savage, Minnesota, edged out Houghton’s Michael Fraley by six seconds to take the title. Chassell’s Maria Velat was the fastest woman.
– In the 10k Classic, Thomas Golin of Hamel, Minnesota, finished 107 seconds ahead of Houghton’s Stephen Eles. Susy Ziegler from Marquette won the women’s division, with Angie Grunert from Houghton placing third.

The Detroit Lions have signed one-year contracts with long snapper Don Muhlbach and defensive end Kerry Hyder. This will be Muhlbach’s 15th season with Detroit.
