Chassell Girls Top Munising, Advance to Regional Final – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
In the high school girls basketball regional semifinals last night…
– In Class C, the Houghton girls basketball season ended with a 68-34 loss to St. Ignace. The Saints dominated from the opening tipoff, scoring the first 12 points of the game, and building leads of 26-4 after the first quarter, and 41-10 at halftime. Kara Pietila led the Gremlins with 13 points, and Kendra Monette added 11.
– In Class D, Chassell advanced to the finals with a 52-46 victory over Munising. Milly Allen scored 16 for the Panthers, and Sydney Danison had 11 points and 10 rebounds. After disposing of the U.P.’s top-ranked team, Chassell will face Bark River-Harris for the regional title tomorrow night at 7:00 Eastern Time at Kingsford.

In boys tournament action tonight…
– Houghton will play at Calumet for the Class C district title. Our coverage will begin around 6:40 on 97.7 The Wolf and TheWolf.com.
– In Class D at Dollar Bay, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City will meet Baraga at 5:30 in the first district semifinal. Ontonagon will meet Lake Linden-Hubbell at 7:30 on the other semifinal.
– In the Class D Bessemer District, Ewen-Trout Creek will play the host Speedboys tonight. Republic-Michigamme will play at Wakefield-Marenisco in the other semifinal.

Hancock will face Big Rapids in the hockey tournament quarterfinals tonight at Sault Ste. Marie. Our broadcast on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com will begin just after 7:00, ahead of a 7:30 faceoff. The winner will advance to the semifinals downstate in Plymouth, and will face either Grand Rapids Catholic Central or Detroit Country Day Friday at 1:30.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team continued its Florida schedule with with a split against Defiance College yesterday. The Lions lost the first game 1-0, then claimed the second game 9-6. Brian Doyle had two hits, and drove in three runs. Joey Krug doubled, and drove in four runs.

The Finlandia University softball team also earned a split yesterday, as their Florida trip continued. The Lions lost 10-1 to Franklin College, and then defeated Pittsburgh-Greensburg 11-0. Denia Bent threw a three-hitter in the shutout. Finlandia will face Emmanuel College and Wheelock College today.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the Toronto Raptors tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 7:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings suffered their fourth straight loss last night, falling 6-5 in overtime to the Boston Bruins. Anthony Mantha scored twice for Detroit. Jared Coreau made his first start since being called up from Grand Rapids, and gave up four goals before being pulled early in the second period. Jimmy Howard allowed the final two goals. The Wings will host Tomáš Tatar and the Las Vegas Golden Knights tomorrow evening. Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB
In spring training baseball, the Detroit Tigers lost 7-2 to the New York Yankees yesterday. Francisco Liriano gave up one hit and struck out three over two scoreless innings. The Tigers face the Toronto Blue Jays this afternoon.

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped a 6-4 decision to the Chicago White Sox yesterday. Wade Miley pitched three scoreless innings, but was touched for three runs before leaving in the fourth. The Brewers take on the Kansas City Royals this afternoon.

Great Bear Chase
Online registration for Saturday’s Great Bear Chase closes at midnight tonight. The cross country ski event at the Swedetown Trails includes 50k, 25k and 10k freestyle and classic races, along with a 50k skiathlon combo. There will also be an in-person registration opportunity Friday between 4:00 and 8:30 at Calumet High School. Link to the Great Bear Chase website here.
