Nine Upper Peninsula high school Quiz Bowl teams participated in the Spring 2018 Blizzard Bowl Tournament on the campus of Michigan Technological University on Saturday, February 24.
This was the fifth Blizzard Bowl and was sponsored by the University’s Center for Pre-College Outreach and the Michigan Tech Quiz Bowl Club. Participating high schools were Houghton, Lake Linden-Hubbell, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Calumet, Negaunee and Chassell.
Quiz bowl is a fast-paced contest with four-player teams facing off against one another in a race to answer in-depth trivia questions. A question could challenge the teams’ knowledge of history, literature, science, math, popular culture, or geography. Participants must have a wide array of facts at the ready during competition.
Casey Bindas, the president of Michigan Tech’s Quiz Bowl Club, said the club enjoys hosting the tournament. “When I was in high school, we really didn’t go to that many events and I had no idea how widespread high school Quiz Bowl is. Quiz Bowl is a fun game and by hosting tournaments we give high school students a chance to play more and find out for themselves how fun it is.”
The Houghton High School “A” team took first place. Negaunee “A” captured second place by virtue of a tie breaker over Calumet “A” which took third.
The top scorers of the day were Ann Desrochers (Houghton), Ella Uren (Negaunee), Jack Gockenbach (Chassell), Deklan Marshal (Negaunee), Samuel Fang (Houghton), Eleicia Giachino (Calumet), Juho Saede (Lake Linden-Hubbell) and Michaela Johnson (Negaunee).
Each top individual scorer was awarded a book of their choice. The top three scoring teams took away a plaque and members of the first-place team were awarded t-shirts.
