Finding Time For Exercise

As the weather begins to change over the next few weeks, there will be more opportunities to get out and exercise.

So it’s important to know the facts about healthy eating and exercise so you don’t miss out on those opportunities or spend too much time doing the wrong thing.

UP Health System—Portage Health and Fitness Manager Angela Luskin says one myth of exercise that so many people fall for is that there is not enough time.

Luskin said, “With the myth about having no time, it really is about prioritizing. What are our priorities? And if exercise is high enough on that priority list, then we will fit it in.”

Another myth that sidetracks people is believing they must exercise for long periods of time to get any benefits.  “Trying to get over the myths that you have to exercise for 60, 90 minutes—you don’t. Any little bit helps so even if I can find two 15 minute slots in my day, that is sufficient,” said Luskin.

Luskin says taking 15 minutes before and after work or during your lunch break to do a little exercise can really help.

People can also help themselves in other ways like taking the stairs instead of the elevator or parking further away from the store when shopping.
