Music Workshops Highlight Week Leading To Heikinpäivä

HANCOCK — There’s still a place for you in the music workshops that Heikinpäivä is providing this year, so don’t miss a beat, and reserve your seat!

Festival programming continues Tuesday with a lecture and recital about the ancient Finnish instrument jouhikko, which was nearly lost to history but is seeing a renewed interest here in the Copper Country. For only $8, you can not only hear how this unique instrument is played, but also learn a bit about how it came to be, and what makes it an interesting instrument to musicians today. This program begins at 6 p.m. at the Finnish American Heritage Center (FAHC).

On Wednesday, also at 6 p.m. at the FAHC, artist in residence Jonathan Rundman will lead the first of the workshops he’s giving during his stay in Hancock. He’ll offer instruction and insight into songwriting. This class is $15 per person, and gives budding artists the chance to learn from an experienced songwriter who’s enjoyed international success. Depending on the needs and interest of the group, topics can include creativity, composition, music theory, brainstorming, showbiz, marketing, and more. All levels of experience are welcome!

Then on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the FAHC, Rundman will lead a harmonium workshop. There’ll never be a better opportunity to improve (or discover) your skills on this instrument. Piano players, accordionists, organists, and rock/blues keyboard players are encouraged to attend! For only $15 per person, students can some traditional and contemporary Finnish tunes, and explore different approaches to harmonium accompaniment and arrangement.

To register for any of these unique Heikinpäivä offerings, call (906) 482-1413.
