Houghton: Agnes M. Hilgers, 90, of Jacker Avenue in Houghton, passed away on Thursday morning, January 11, 2018 at U.P. Health System-Portage Hospital in Hancock.
She was born in her family home in Houghton on December 14, 1927, a daughter of the late John and Bertha (Bleise) Hilgers. After attending St. Ignatius grade school in Houghton, she graduated St. Joseph-St. Patrick High School in Hancock in 1944.
She lived and worked for a time in St. Paul, Minnesota and Milwaukee, Wisconsin before returning to the Copper Country. She was employed at Michigan Tech in the R.O.T.C. Department, at the Houghton Public Library, at the Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Michigan office, and at the Isle Royale National Park Service office.
Agnes was a woman of deep faith and was a devout member of St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church of Houghton where she was an Eucharistic Minister, taught Catechism, belonged to the Altar Society and Sodality of Fatima. She also volunteered at the Portage Hospital Gift Shop, and she loved dogs.
Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence Hilgers; and her sisters Helen DeRoche, Catherine DesRochers, Frances Massis, and Marie Hilgers. She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends including special friends Robert Soumis and Annette Butina.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. on Monday at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. John Martignon to officiate. Spring Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.
Friends may call at the church for an hour before the Mass on Monday.
