With Great Lakes shipping season coming to it’s winter halt, the Soo Locks will be closing next week. The U.S Army core of engineers uses the winter closure time to perform maintenance and any necessary repairs. Some of the items that will receive maintenance attention include hydraulic systems and locking mechanisms that operate the gates necessary for retaining water and manipulating levels.
Often times the locks stay open later in the season, but with an early cold season this year that has already lodged two freighters in the frozen waters, the Corps has decided to begin the closure on this coming Monday, January 15th.
The Locks are scheduled to reopen on March 26th.
