The Copper Country may make some of the best pasties around but there’s one town south of the border that can claim something no Yooper baker can.
Real del Monte is in central Mexico and they also have a history of Cornish immigrants, so the pasty is part of their culture as well.
They recently baked what they claim to be the longest pasty in the world as part of their annual Festival Del Paste.
At 12 feet long, it’s certainly not like those served at Pastyfest in Calumet–and rather than carrots or rutabagas, this pasty has chilies.
The weekend festival also featured an unveiling of a plaque commemorating the town’s strong ties to Cornwall, where miners came from to settle in the Mexican town in the 1850’s.
