High School
The Calumet High School volleyball team advanced to the state Class C tournament semifinals with a 3-0 win over Houghton Lake in the quarterfinals last night in Munising. The Copper Kings took the first set easily, 25-12, then pulled out narrow, identical 25-23 wins in the second and third sets. Leah Bjorn led Calumet with 24 kills and 23 digs. Celia Kiilunen added 11 kills. Amber Johnson had 33 digs. Brea Johnson had 21 assists and 23 digs. The Copper Kings will face two-time defending state champion Bronson in the semifinals Friday afternoon at 2:00 at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. Calumet lost to Bronson in straight sets in last year’s semifinals.
Finlandia
Both Finlandia University basketball teams play at Lakeland College tonight.
Jordan Andrews has been named the new women’s soccer head coach for the Lions. Andrews served as an assistant for both the Finlandia men’s and women’s teams for the past several seasons. He takes over for Brent Chase, who had been coaching both the men’s and women’s teams. Learn more about Coach Andrews here.
MTU
The Michigan Tech volleyball team opens the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament tonight. The third-seeded Huskies will host sixth-seed Tiffin at 6:00 at the SDC.
Nine MTU football players have been awarded postseason GLIAC honors. L’Anse defensive lineman Cody Goldsworthy, Negaunee offensive lineman Jeremy Bell, and receiver Jacob Wenzlick were named to the All-League Second Team. Cayman Berg-Morales, Jordan Ferguson, Spencer Moran, Travis Tidwell, John Williams and Marvin Wright received honorable mention votes.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings return to action tonight, when they host the Calgary Flames. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Wings will be without Martin Frk, who is nursing a groin injury. He could be on the bench for a week.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons visit the Milwaukee Bucks tonight.
MLB
The Major League Baseball General Manager meetings continue in Florida. Yesterday, Tigers GM Al Avila told reporters that designated hitter Victor Martinez is expected to be ready for spring training, after undergoing surgery to deal with an irregular heartbeat. He also said that Miguel Cabrera has changed his off-season routine to help him deal with the back problem that hampered him last season.
