Bill Seeks to Expemt Parents, Teachers from Sales Tax

In an effort to bring down the price of school supplies, a state lawmaker is proposing a school supply tax holiday. House Republican Joe Graves of Genesee County says his proposal will give both parents and teachers a break from paying Michigan six percent sales tax on essential school supplies during the month of August each year. He says kids “need new clothes, new shoes, better technology,” and all of that cost puts a financial strain on families. The proposal would also apply to teachers, who often use their own money to buy supplies.
