EAGLE HARBOR — Bruce Edward Olson, 85, of Eagle Harbor Township, died Thursday, November 2, 2017, at Garden View Assisted Living in Calumet.
Bruce was born in Hancock, on January 17, 1932, to Edward and Emma Olson who lived on the Hancock Canal. Bruce graduated from Hancock High School in 1950 and went to work for Ford Motor Company in the Detroit area. He enlisted in the Army in 1951 and served until 1953.
Bruce was married to Dolores McCarty and they had two daughters, Debra Lynn and Tammy Sue. Their marriage ended in divorce.
When Bruce returned from the Army he went back to work at Ford Motor Company. Bruce married Opal Jeane Watson in 1971. They resided in Clarkston until his retirement from Ford Motor Company in 1992. They moved to Cat Harbor on Lake Superior in Eagle Harbor Township.
Bruce became involved in local activities, becoming a volunteer fire fighter and medical first responder for the Township. Bruce also served on the Board of Review and the Solid Waste Committee for Eagle Harbor Township. Bruce was one of the original groomers of the Eagle Harbor cross country ski trail. He was an avid long distance runner and a member of the “Posse” running group. Bruce ran his final marathon in Detroit when he was 71 years old.
Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Emma and Edward Olson; his sister, Margaret Allen; brother, James Raymond Olson; granddaughter, Rebecca Legue; and step-daughter, Shari Dickson.
Bruce is survived by his wife of 46 years, Opal Jeane Watson; as well as his children, Debra McCormick, Tammy Kobe and Erik Olson (Sybil); stepdaughter, Susan Claycomb (Douglas); step-son, Robert J. Bennett (Vicki); seven grandchildren, eight stepgrandchildren, 11 greatgrandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
Bruce will be cremated and his ashes will be buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Eagle Harbor Township. A family memorial is planned to take place in December in Clarkston, Michigan.
