Dollar Bay
Martha S. Kemppainen, 95, a former resident of Dollar Bay, passed away Monday evening November 6, 2017, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock where she had been a resident for the past 5 years.
She was born on July 7, 1922, in Franklin Mine, a daughter of the late Charles and Karolina (Kuusisto) Sirvio. Martha was raised in Franklin Mine and attended the Lower Pewabic School.
She then moved to the Detroit area where she worked for Burrows Company.
She returned to the Copper Country and on November 18, 1950, was united in marriage to Walter Kemppainen. The couple had resided in Dollar Bay where they had raised their three children. On March 13, 2010, Walter preceded Martha in death.
Mrs. Kemppainen had worked as a Nurse’s Aide at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hancock and the Houghton County Medical Care Facility where she retired from after 23 years of working the night shift.
Martha was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock. She enjoyed crocheting, blueberry picking, Sunday picnicking at McLain’s and spending time at the family camp in Rice Lake.
Preceding her in death were her husband, her parents and her brothers.

Funeral services for Martha will be held 4:30 pm Friday, November 10, 2017, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock with Rev. DJ Rasner to officiate. Spring burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery of Hancock.
Friends may call on Friday November 10, 2017, from 3:30 pm until time of services at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock.
