Library Millage Renewal To Be Decided Tomorrow

The fate of the Portage Lake District Library will be decided Tuesday.

The 7-year millage renewal to support the library is on the ballot for residents of the library district.

The levy of 1.96 mills has supported the library for over 20 years but without it, Library Director Dillon Geshel says it would mean the end to their service.

Geshel said, “We rely almost exclusively on millage revenue for all operations at the library. Those revenues make up about 86 percent of our revenue and expenditures. So without that funding, there’s no other source of revenue that would make up for that, so ultimately the library would be forced to close.”

If approved, the millage will generate about $460,000 in revenue for the library each year.

Here is how the proposal will appear on the ballot:

LIBRARY MILLAGE RENEWAL
Shall the Portage Lake District Library, County of Houghton, be authorized to levy a renewal of the previously voted increase in the tax limitation, which expires in 2017, in an amount not to exceed 1.9606 mills ($1.9606 on each $1,000 of taxable value) against all taxable property within the Portage Lake District Library district for a period of seven (7) years, 2018 to 2024, inclusive, for the purpose of providing funds for all district library purposes authorized by law?  The estimate of the revenue the Portage Lake District Library will collect if the millage is approved and levied in the 2018 calendar year is approximately $460,000.
