Tigers Shade Yankees
Alex Avila’s long single in the bottom of the ninth drove in Victor Martinez with the winning run, as the Tigers edged the Yankees 3-2 yesterday. Kyle Lobstein gave up just two runs over six innings in his first major-league start.
The Tigers open a four-game set against the White Sox in Chicago tonight. Justin Verlenader will start against Scott Carroll. Hear the first pitch at 8:10 on FM 99.3 and AM 1400, WCCY.
The Royals lost, so Detroit now trails Kansas City in the American League Central Division by a game-and-a-half.
Lobstein was rewarded for his successful start by being sent back to Toledo. Evan Reed was called up to provide some bullpen help. Lobstein is expected to be brought back on Monday, when rosters can be expanded. Kyle Ryan will be called up from Toledo to start the second game of tomorrow’s day-night doubleheader. Ryan was promoted from Double-A to Triple-A a few weeks ago. He’s 3-0 in five starts for the Mud Hens, with a 1.64 ERA.
Pitcher Luke Putkonen began a rehab assignment at Lakeland yesterday. He’s been sidelined since May with an elbow problem.
Brewers to Face Giants
The Brewers had yesterday off, and open a set at San Francisco tonight. Wily Peralta will start against Ryan Vogelsong.
The Cardinals also had yesterday off, so Milwaukee continues to lead Saint Louis by a game-and-a-half in the National League Central Division.
Lions, Packers Wrap Up NFL Preseason
The Lions shut out the Bills 23-0 in their final preseason game last night. Several of Detroit’s starters didn’t play, including quarterback Matthew Stafford, receiver Calvin Johnson and defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. Backup quarterback Dan Orlovsky completed seven passes, but for just 39 yards. Third-stringer Kellen Moore connected on 17 of 28 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns. The Detroit defense allowed Buffalo just 97 yards of net offense. The Lions open their season a week from Monday at home against the Giants. Hear the broadcast on FM 99.3 and AM 1400 WCCY.
Lions’ rookie linebacker Kyle Van Noy had successful surgery yesterday morning to fix a core muscle injury. It will be a day or two before we know what his recovery timetable will be.
The Packers closed their exhibition campaign with a 34-14 victory over the Chiefs. Matt Flynn and Scott Tolzien each threw two touchdown passes. Aaron Rodgers, Eddie Lacy, Jordy Nelson, Clay Matthews and Julius Peppers sat out. The Packers begin the regular season Thursday night at Seattle.
High School Football
In the first high school football action of the season last night…
– L’Anse christened Volunteer Field with a 16-14 victory over Houghton. Brandon Koski threw two touchdown passes to Michael Anderson for the Purple Hornets. Ben Collaer tossed a TD pass for the Gremlins, and Thomas Schmidt ran for a score. All of the scoring came in the first half. The Gremlins had four potential scoring drives in the second half. One was stalled by a penalty, one by a sack, and two by fumbles.

– Calumet edged Northland Pines 14-12. Kaden Kangas scored the game-winning touchdown after an interception by Evan Billeck. The Eagles threatened to tie the game with a late touchdown, but the Copper Kings intercepted the two-point attempt.
– Ewen-Trout Creek lost to Rapid River 26-0.
– Ontonagon fell to Bellaire 36-18.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell opens its season at home against Baraga tomorrow afternoon. Hear the broadcast on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
High School Cross Country
In high school cross country, the Houghton boys came in third behind Escanaba and Negaunee at the Marquette Invitational yesterday. Jacob Colling placed fourth overall, and David Jazsczak finished sixth. Calumet finished sixth as a team, with Mitchell Delong in ninth place individually. Chassell placed 11th, and Hancock 14th.
On the girls’ side, Marquette dominated… taking five of the top seven positions. Calumet finished second, with Leah Killunen placing eighth individually. Houghton was eighth overall, led by a 10th place finish by Marika Abbott. Hancock placed ninth.

Finlandia Fall Athletic Schedule Opens
The Finlandia University fall athletic schedule opens this weekend.
– The volleyball team is in Ann Arbor, where they’ll face Concordia-Ann Arbor and Concordia-Wisconsin this afternoon.
– Both Finlandia soccer teams play at MacMurray College tomorrow, and Eureka College on Sunday.
Copper Harbor Trails Fest This Weekend
The Copper Harbor Trails Festival officially opens tomorrow, but warm-up events and social activities are already underway. Tomorrow’s events include Enduro Races and the Dan Wissman Memorial Dock Jump Competition. Races on Sunday include the Downhill on the Overflow Trail, the Junior Fat Tire, and 17 and 27-mile Cross Country Races. On-site registration will be available this weekend.
