10 Good Things Happening In Houghton–October 26, 2017

How about a little good news?

Here are 10 Good Things That Happened in Houghton in the Last Two Weeks, as compiled by City Manager Eric Waara.

1. Houghton’s residential curbside recycling tonnage has been consistently running over 20 percent and growing.  People are still calling for the curbside bins and looking for opportunities to recycle, so that number is expected to keep growing.
2. The new bridge and sidewalk into Kestner Park is complete and Waara said Houghton DPW did an awesome job.
3. The LSPR raced through Downtown Houghton last weekend without incident.  Initial reports are that the town was really busy even when everyone was at the hockey game.
4. Houghton had one recently-licensed rental convert to the new “owner occupied” rental license, which will expire when the home is sold.
5. Someone donated a composter to the Beautification Committee.
6. Three new gardens were planted downtown along Lakeshore Drive using donated and relocated plants.
7. Houghton has over 120 volunteers scheduled for this weekend’s Make A Difference Day.
8. Houghton has 20 volunteers assisting with Pumpkin and Costume judging for Treat Street.
9. The cardboard boat races held last Friday were very well attended and had better weather than you could ask for.
10. Several members of the Houghton community say the police department is doing good things (or needs more calories) as they keep delivering goodies to the office.

And finally, the council approved some changes to their meeting dates for November and December due to the holidays.

Meetings will take place November 8^th and the 29^th and there will only be one meeting in December on the 13^th.
