High School
In high school volleyball yesterday, Lake Linden-Hubbell swept its triangular matches against Watersmeet and Dollar Bay, defeating the Nimrods 3-0 (25-11, 25-5, 25-11), and the Blue Bolts 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-17). Maija Codere led the Lakes with 15 kills in the two matches. Erin Seppala added 13. Joslynn Perala had 17 digs, and Mackenzie LePage added 14.
In high school football last night…
– Hancock blanked Houghton 21-0 in the annual Copper Bowl game. The Bulldogs broke the game open on the second quarter, with a touchdown run by Alex Nordstrom, and a scoring pass from Colton Salani to Grant Hokenson. Salani’s short touchdown plunge in the fourth quarter sealed the win.
– Calumet upended Mid-Peninsula Conference champion Gladstone 20-16. Brett Loukus ran for a touchdown, and passed for another. The Calumet defense sealed the win with a big stop late in the game. The Copper Kings earned a guaranteed playoff berth.
– L’Anse’s playoff hopes ended with a 35-14 loss to WestPAC champion West Iron County.
– Ontonagon routed Carney Nadeau 86-12.

The Upper Peninsula cross country finals will be run today at Munising.
In hockey, Team Copper Country continues competition at the Split Season League Playoffs at Jackson this weekend. The result of Friday’s opening game against Lansing was not reported. Game two will be this morning, with a possible third game this evening. The championship match will be played tomorrow morning.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University volleyball team plays at Wisconsin-Platteville today at noon.
Both Finlandia soccer teams play at the Illinois Institute of Technology today.
MTU
It’s a big Homecoming weekend at Michigan Tech.
Jake Lucchini’s goal late in the third period lifted the Michigan Tech hockey team to a 5-4 victory over Alabama-Huntsville last night. Lucchini added two assists. Mitch Reinke and Joel L’Esperance each had a goal and an assist. Patrick Munson stopped 24 shots to get the win in net. Those teams play again tonight at 7:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
The MTU volleyball team swept Davenport University 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 25-11) yesterday. MacAulay Petersen led the Huskies with 12 kills. Mariah Sherman added 11. Elle Heinonen and Laura DeMarchi each had 11 digs. The Huskies host Purdue Northwest today at 4:00.
The Tech soccer team fell to third-ranked Grand Valley State 2-0 yesterday.
The Huskies football team hosts Wayne State this afternoon at 1:00.
NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team stunned the University of Wisconsin 5-4 in overtime at the Resch Center in Green Bay last night. The Badgers are ranked fifth and sixth in the two national polls. Those teams meet in Green Bay again tonight.
The NMU football team entertains Saginaw Valley State this afternoon.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost 4-3 in overtime to the Washington Capitals last night. Tomáš Tatar scored twice for Detroit. Patr Mrazek stopped 37 shots, but took the loss in net. The Wings host the Vancouver Canucks tomorrow night. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, hockey coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons fell behind in the third quarter, came back to take a late lead, but wound up losing to the Washington Wizards 115-111 last night. Reggie Jackson led Detroit with 21 points. Andre Drummond pulled down 12 rebounds, but again missed much of the game because of foul trouble. The Pistons play the Knicks in New York tonight. Tipoff is at 8:00 on 99.3 The Lift.
MLB
Justin Verlander and the Houston Astros forced a seventh game in the American League Championship Series with a 7-1 victory over the New York Yankees in game six last night. The former Tigers ace gave up five hits over seven shutout innings. He struck out eight. The series will be decided in Houston tonight. The winner will face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.
As expected, the Detroit Tigers introduced Ron Gardenhire as the new manager yesterday. Reports say it’s a three-year contract. Also as expected, the Tigers announced that they will buy out the contract of pitcher Anibal Sanchez for five-million dollars, rather than pay him 16.8-million to complete the deal’s final season.
LSPR
Arkadiusz Gruszka and Lukasz Wronski continued their domination of the Rally circuit yesterday, building a two minute lead in the first day of competition at Lake Superior Performance Rally. Justin Pritchard and Rachelle Kaltak are in second place. The local team of Matt and Janell Huuki is in sixth place, in a tight competition that has seven cars within four minutes of the lead.
