On the opening night of the eighth grade girls basketball tournament at Calumet…
– In Division Two, Dollar Bay defeated Lake Linden 40-35 in overtime. Kami Klein had 21 points for the Lakes, and Kaylee Cavis scored 17 for the Blue Bolts. Ontonagon stopped Chassell 45-27. Morgan Bobula of the Gladiators had 16 points, and Trisha Pietila scored 10 for the Panthers. Dollar Bay and Ontonagon will play tomorrow at 5:00 for the Division Two title.
– In Division One, Baraga surprised top-seeded L’Anse 38-31. Reide Osterman scored 17 for the Vikings, and Taylor Sanregret scored 12 for the Purple Hornets. Calumet defeated Hancock 61-42. Lizzie Torola of the Copper Kings scored 22 points. Kirsten Dennis led the Bulldogs with 21. Calumet will play Baraga in the Division One championship at 6:30 tomorrow.

MTU
After a win and a tie against Lake Superior State University last weekend, the Michigan Tech hockey team slipped a bit in this week’s national rankings. The Huskies dropped out of the top 20 in the USA Today poll, but held at 15th in the USCHO.com poll.

The Michigan Tech Blue Line Club is hosting a Meet the Coaches and Team session tonight between 7:00 and 9:00 in the ‘old’ Blue Line Room outside of University Images. You can meet the 10 newcomers on the roster and the two new assistant coaches.

The Blue Line Club’s first lunch of the season will be held Friday at noon. Head coach Joe Shawhan will talk about this season, and Alabama-Huntsville head coach Mike Corbett will also speak. The cost of the lunch is $10.00 per person. Please reserve your seats by emailing blueline@mtu.edu by Thursday at noon.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 last night. Tampa Bay took an early lead with two first period goals off Jimmy Howard. Detroit tied it in the second period, with goals by Justin Abdelkader and Mike Green. Nikita Kucherov’s second tally of the night early in the third period was the game-winner. The Wings skate at Toronto tomorrow night. Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers will hold open tryouts tomorrow night at 9:30 Dee Stadium. Adults who wish to skate with the Pioneers should email their name, phone number and recent hockey history to PortageLakePioneersHockey@gmail.com.

MLB
The New York Yankees defeated the Houston Astros 8-1 last night. Houston still leads the American League Championship Series two games to one. Game four will be played this afternoon in New York.

The National League Championship Series resumes tonight, when the Chicago Cubs host the Los Angeles Dodgers. L-A leads that series two games to none.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the Tennessee Titans scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns, and defeated the Indianapolis Colts 36-22. If you played The Wolf Pro Football Challenge, you must have picked at least eight games correctly to be eligible to become our weekly winner.

Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy confirmed yesterday that Brett Hundley will be the team’s starting quarterback. He’ll replace Aaron Rodgers, who is facing surgery for the broken collarbone he suffered in Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings. The Packers promoted third-string quarterback Joe Callahan to the active roster to serve as Hundley’s backup.
