Houghton Boys, Chassell Girls Take WestPAC CC Meet – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school volleyball last night…
– Calumet dispatched L’Anse 3-0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-15). Lea Bjorn and Celia Kiilunen each had nine kills. Amber Johnson had 13 digs.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell blanked Baraga 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-13). Mariah Willmer had 11 kills, and Erin Seppala added 10. Joslynn Perala had seven aces and 13 digs.
– Ewen-Trout Creek downed Watersmeet 3-1.

In high school football tonight…
– Hancock entertains West Iron County in a battle for first place in the WestPAC.
– Calumet entertains Gogebic. The Calumet Homecoming parade will begin at 6:00 on Mine Street, and proceed through town to Agassiz Field. The Copper Kings need a win to keep their hopes for a guaranteed playoff berth alive. Pregame coverage will begin around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell travels to Norway.
– L’Anse visits Northland Pines.
– Houghton plays at Hurley.
– Ontonagon hosts Forest Park.

In volleyball tonight…
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City plays at Chassell.

In volleyball tomorrow, Marquette, Calumet, Hancock, Chassell and Baraga are among the teams competing at the Houghton Invitational.

In cross country, the Houghton boys dominated the WestPAC meet at the Kilpela farm yesterday. Gogebic finished second, followed by Chassell, Calumet and Hancock. Jeffers placed seventh, and Dollar Bay eighth. The Gremlins’ Clayton Sayen, Seth Helman and Leif Odegard finished one-two-three.

After the meet, Sayen was honored as the WestPAC’s Most Valuable Boys Runner. Helman and Odegard were named to the All-Conference First Team, along with Chassell’s Ben Tuomi, and Gogebic’s Isiaih Aili, Uriah Aili and Devon Beyers.

Chassell easily outran Calumet to take the girls title. Houghton was third, followed by Jeffers, Hancock and Dollar Bay. Lela Rautiola of the Panthers finished 19 seconds better than Calumet’s Clarity Gipp.

Rautiola was named the WestPAC’s Most Valuable Girls Runner. Houghton’s Arabel Needham, Calumet’s Clarity Gipp, Chassell’s Jenna Pietila, Gwen Kangas and Paige Sleeman, and Dollar Bay’s Natalie Maxson were also named to the All-Conference First Team.

In hockey, Team Copper Country skates at Shattuck St. Mary’s tomorrow and Sunday.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University volleyball team will play at the Grace Bible College tournament in suburban Grand Rapids this weekend. The Lions will face Mount Mary this afternoon, the host team tonight, and Faith Baptist Bible College tomorrow.

The Finlandia football team hosts Trinity Bible College tomorrow at noon. Pregame coverage will start around 11:40 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

The Finlandia women’s soccer team plays at Mount Mary University tomorrow morning. The men’s team visits Concordia-Wisconsin tomorrow afternoon.

Both Finlandia basketball teams will start their practice schedules with a Midnight Madness event tomorrow. Fans are invited to the Paavo Nurmi Center beginning at 10:00 for a student versus faculty basketball game, a three-point shooting contest, and other activities. The teams will be introduced at 11:50, and the men’s team will begin a scrimmage at midnight.

MTU
The MTU hockey team skates at Lake Superior State tonight and tomorrow night.

The Michigan Tech volleyball team plays at the Midwest Regional Crossover Tournament today and tomorrow in Aurora, Illinois. The Huskies will face Bellarmine this afternoon, and Drury this evening.

The MTU soccer team hosts Ashland tonight at 7:00 at Sherman Field.

The Tech football team plays at Ashland tomorrow afternoon.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team plays at Ferris State tonight and tomorrow night.

The NMU football team plays at Tiffin tomorrow.

NHL
Luke Glendening’s shorthanded goal late in the third period lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-2 victory over the Arizona Coyotes last night. Martin Frk and Henrik Zetterberg had scored earlier in the contest. Frans Nielsen added a late empty-netter. Jimmy Howard stopped 33 shots to get the win. The Wings will meet the Golden Knights in Las Vegas for the first time tonight. Face-off is at 10:30 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons continue their preseason tonight in Milwaukee. We’ll broadcast selected Pistons regular-season games on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB
The Chicago Cubs overcame an early deficit, then held off the Washington Nationals to take a 9-8 win in the deciding game of their National League Divisional Playoff Series last night. The Cubs will face the Los Angeles Dodgers for the National League pennant beginning tomorrow. The American League Championship Series between the New York Yankees and the Houston Astros starts tonight.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the Philadelphia Eagles got past the Carolina Panthers 28-23.
