The Houghton-Portage Township School District continues to reap the benefits of Michigan’s School of Choice policy. Enrollment numbers for the 2016-2017 school year published by the MLive website show that 43 percent of students at the Houghton schools come from other districts. That’s one of the highest percentages in the state. There were 869 students living in the district. 594 non-resident students were enrolled, and just 91 resident students enrolled in other districts. Two other Keweenaw Peninsula districts had slight gains – CLK was up by 17 students, and Dollar Bay by nine. All the rest are underwater. Hancock had a net loss of 156, with 233 students who live in the district enrolled elsewhere. Stanton Township had a net loss of 188 students… Chassell, 72 students…. Adams Township, 29 students… and Lake Linden-Hubbell, 20 students. If you’d like to check the figures, click here.
