Temporary Construction Closure Will Reroute Traffic at Craig Lake State Park in Baraga County

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources today announced that Nelligan Lake Road in Baraga County will be closed for roughly three weeks for road improvements.

A detour map shows the Nelligan Road closure and reroute at Craig Lake State Park.“The closure will go into effect Oct. 2 and is scheduled to be lifted Oct. 20,” said Doug Barry, DNR unit supervisor at Craig Lake State Park. “During that time, a detour will be available for those seeking access to portions of Craig Lake State Park.”

Scheduled improvements include replacing two failed metal culverts with a concrete box culvert and resurfacing critical portions of the road for improved access.

Before Oct. 2, DNR construction crews will be working on the road to limit the length of time the road will need to be closed. Motorists are advised to use caution in the area.

The road closure, which will be from the intersection of Keewaydin Lake Road north to the parking lot for Craig Lake State Park, will result in “no through” traffic.

Those seeking to access Craig Lake State Park via this route will be redirected to North Nestoria Road. Property owners beyond the Keewaydin Lake intersection will have permitted access.

This project, which is expected to cost roughly $60,000, is being funded by the DNR Parks and Recreation Division’s Capital Outlay Fund.
