The Houghton Police Department says they are investigating they are describing as a “drowning accident” that happened on Saturday shortly after 3pm.
Officers were called to the docks on East Lakeshore Drive for a 17-year-old unconscious male.
Bystanders began CPR. Officers from the Houghton Police Department, Michigan State Police, Michigan Tech Public Safety and Michigan Tech First Responders began life saving measures when they arrived.
The teenager was taken to U.P. Health System—Portage, then to U.P. Health System–Marquette and later to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.
Officials at Hancock High School confirmed this morning that the young man has passed away. Grief counselors are on hand to talk to students. Hancock Schools Superintendent Kipp Beaudoin said they are humbled by the outpouring of concern from the community and appreciate the support they have received.
The victim’s name has not been released pending further investigation.
