Brewers Pound Padres
The Brewers pounded out 16 hits, and blasted the Padres 10-1 last night. Aramis Ramirez singled, doubled and homered. Ryan Braun also hit one out. Kyle Lohse looked a little rusty early, after missing a start because of a sore ankle. He gave up a run in the second inning, but struck out Will Venable with the bases loaded to limit the damage. He settled in, and completed six innings to earn the win.

The Brewers continue that set at San Diego tonight. Jimmy Nelson  will start against Tyson Ross.

The Cardinals also won, so Milwaukee’s lead over Saint Louis in the National League Central Division remains at a game-and-a-half.

Freese to Kick for Lions
Rookie Nate Freese has been named the kicker for the Detroit Lions this season. Freese was selected by Detroit in the seventh round of the NFL Draft this spring. The other kicker in camp, Giorgio Tavecchio, was among a group of players released yesterday. One of the others cut was cornerback Jonte Green, who had started seven games and played in 24 over the last two seasons in Detroit.

Rookie linebacker Kyle Van Noy will see a specialist to determine the extent of an abdominal injury that has forced him to the sidelines. He may need surgery to correct a sports hernia.

L’Anse Dedicates New Football Field
Volunteer Field Dedication
The bleachers were full as the L’Anse School District cut the ribbon on its new football field last night…

Superintendent Carrie Meyer explained that the name was chosen to honor hundreds of volunteers who contributed thousands of hours of work to build the new facility…

Football coach Mark Leaf echoed his appreciation…

Meyer said the value of the time, in-kind donations and financial contributions from the community add up to more than a million dollars. During the ceremony, football team captains placed pieces of sod from Meadowbrook Field underneath each goal post, to tie the new field to the site where the Purple Hornets had played since the mid-60s. Work at the new complex continues. A soccer field is already in place, and there are plans for baseball and softball fields. The first game will be played at Volunteer Field Thursday night against Houghton. Hear the broadcast on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
