Be a good neighbor and do your part to be SepticSmart

HANCOCK:  Did you know one in five U.S. homes have septic systems? Yours may be one of them. If your septic system is not properly maintained, you may be risking your family’s health, potentially polluting the environment, and flushing thousands of dollars down the drain.

We’re gearing up for the start of #SepticSmart Week Sept. 18-22.

SepticSmart Week is an annual event focused on educating homeowners and communities on the proper care and maintenance of their septic systems.  Proper septic system use and routine care are vital to protecting public health, preserving our highly valued groundwater, lakes, streams and waterways, and avoiding costly repairs that can result from neglect.

Learn more about the core messages of SepticSmart Week:

  • Think at the Sink
  • Don’t Overload the Commode
  • Don’t Strain Your Drain
  • Shield Your Field
  • Test Your Drinking Water Well

Visit the health department’s website at www.wuphd.org, or www.epa.gov/septic for more homeowner resources and information about SepticSmart Week 2017.
