Although the sun peeked in and out throughout the entire weekend, many are calling this year’s Houghton County Fair a success. Final numbers won’t be available until later today, but according to fair officials, as of Saturday night, attendance was 5 to 10% lower than it has been on average for the past two years, which is a good turnout given the weather conditions. Spectrum Entertainment, who was given the reigns to the midway this year, were very satisfied with the crowds, saying that their ridership for the opening day was up 15% from a typical Thursday. Hope Gockenbach from Chassell was this year’s Miss Houghton County Fair Queen. Homemaker of the Year went to Carol Kreher from Houghton. Among the Silver Plate Winners were Ruth Salo for Floriculture, Jenny Dice for Culinary Arts, Carol Kreher for Needlework, Judy Albee for Horticulture and Fine & Folk Arts for Elisha Houle.
