Tigers Blast Twins
The Tigers pounded out 18 hits, and blew past the Twins 13-4 yesterday. Torii Hunter and Victor Martinez each drove in four runs. Martinez and Rajai Davis homered. Max Scherzer wasn’t sharp, but hung in through five innings, and earned his 15th win of the season.
The Tigers have today off, and host the Yankees in a three-game set beginning tomorrow night. Rick Porcello will start against Brandon McCarthy. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on FM 99.3 and AM 1400, WCCY.
The Royals lost, so the Tigers now trail Kansas City by two games in the American League Central Division.
Brewers Edge Pirates
The Brewers scored all their runs in the first two innings, then held off the Pirates 4-3 yesterday. Mike Fiers turned in another good start, giving up just two runs over seven innings. Andrew McCutchen’s homer of Francisco Rodriguez in the ninth made it close, but Rodriguez closed the game with no further damage to earn his 39th save.
The Brewers open a set at San Diego tonight. Kyle Lohse will return to the rotation, after missing his last start with a sore ankle. Eric Stults will pitch for the Padres.
The Cardinals lost, so MIlwaukee’s lead over Saint Louis in the National League Central Division is now a game-and-a-half. The Pirates are now five back.
Packers Lose Raji for Season
The Green Bay Packers’ exhibition win over the Raiders was costly. Starting nose tackle B.J. Raji tore a biceps, and will miss the season. Green Bay signed former Viking Letroy Guion to be Raji’s backup, but Guion has been out with a hamstring injury, and was not expected to be ready to start the season. The Packers also lost starting center J.C. Tretter to a knee injury. Evaluations continue, but team officials say he’ll miss “multiple weeks.” Rookie fifth-round draft pick Corey Linsley took snaps with the first team offense in practice yesterday.
Former Lions’ backup quarterback Shaun Hill is now the starter in Saint Louis. Rams’ signal-caller Sam Bradford tore his ACL in Saturday night’s game, and will miss the season.
High School Volleyball Season Underway
The high school volleyball season opened Saturday.
– Calumet won the Kingsford Invitational, defeating Marquette 2-1 in the semifinals, and Kingsford 2-0 in the championship match.
– Houghton lost to Rogers City 2-1 in the semifinals at the Sault Ste. Marie Invitational.
– No results were reported from the West Iron County Invitational, where L’Anse, Lake Linden-Hubbell, and Baraga were scheduled to compete.
Ryan Named NMU Track Coach
Northern Michigan University cross country coach Jenny Ryan has also been named head coach of the Wildcats’ track and field program. Ryan has been at NMU for 14 years. She’s headed the cross country program for seven seasons, and been an assistant for the track team, and the Nordic skiing program.
Wolverines’ Golf Outing Sunday
There are a few spots still open in the annual Calumet Wolverines Golf Outing Sunday morning. This year, Cukie’s Scramble will be held at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge course. Tee off is at 11:00. The cost is 140-dollars for a four-person team, which includes 18 holes of golf, lunch and prizes. Money raised supports the Calumet Wolverines hockey team.
