Tigers Split With Twins
The Tigers split their day-night doubleheader with the Twins yesterday, losing the first game 12-4, but taking the nightcap 8-6. In the first game, Minnesota torched spot starter Buck Farmer for seven runs over 1-1/3rd innings. The rest came off Patrick McCoy and Kyle Lobstein, who were called up from Toledo at the last minute, and didn’t even reach the clubhouse at the stadium until the game was underway.
In the second game, Justin Verlander returned after missing his last scheduled start with shoulder inflammation. He wasn’t sharp, giving up four runs over 5-2/3rds innings, but the Detroit offense woke up, led by Eugenio Suarez and Nick Castellanos, who each drove in two runs.
The Tigers wrap up that series at Minnesota this afternoon. Max Scherzer will start against Kyle Gibson. Hear the first pitch at 2:10 on FM 99.3 and AM 1400, WCCY.
The Royals won, so Detroit now trails Kansas City by three games in the American League Central Division.
Brewers Fall to Pirates
Wily Peralta threw three strong innings, then fell apart in the fourth and fifth, and the Brewers lost to the Pirates 10-2. Pittsburgh scored three in the fourth, and five in the fifth, to take a commanding lead.
The Brewers conclude that set against the Pirates this afternoon. Mike Fiers will start against Vance Worley.
The Cardinals won, so Milwaukee’s lead in the National League Central Division is just a half-game. Pittsburgh is now four back.
