When the Continental Fire Company opened in Houghton, they were already the area’s only true nightclub.

Starting this Friday, the Continental will add to their flavor by offering a great dining experience as well.

The newly remodeled kitchen features Chef Mark Pittillo at the helm, who has also served up dishes in the past at Portage Health Hospital and Finlandia University, but even he has never worked in a kitchen like this.

“The kitchen is in the basement,” said Pittillo. “We have a smoker. We have a wood burning pizza oven. I can’t even begin to tell you—it was the most rough-looking basement I’ve ever seen and now it’s a showplace. The kitchen is truly the most modern kitchen I’ve ever been in.”

The menu will feature a selection of elevated traditional items plus several vegan and gluten-free options, utilizing many locally produced ingredients.

The Continental has only been open three days a week as a nightclub, but will expand those hours to offer lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday.

They will have a limited menu to begin with, but the plans are to roll out the full menu in October when the upstairs dining area opens.

“We were fortunate enough to get Michigan Tech to agree to allow us to call the upstairs The Mining School. So, Michigan Tech started here on the second floor of this building back in 1896, I believe it was. And, so that will be The Mining School Restaurant and that will be a menu that changes almost daily,” Pittillo said.

You can view their opening menu on the Continental Fire Company’s Facebook page.
