The Detroit Tigers fought their way to a 10-6 victory over the New York Yankees yesterday afternoon. The tension began when starter Michael Fulmer hit batter Gary Sanchez in the fifth inning. Sanchez had homered the previous inning. In the sixth, New York reliever Tommy Kahnle (cain-lee) threw a pitch behind Detroit batter Miguel Cabrera. Cabrera and Yankees’ catcher Austin Romine wound up in a fist fight, as players flooded onto the field. Benches cleared again in the seventh, when New York pitcher Dellin Betances hit Tigers catcher James McCann in the head with a 98-miles-per-hour fastball. Tempers flared one more time in the eighth, when Detroit reliever Alex Wilson plunked New York’s Todd Frazier in the hip. In all, five players, both managers, and one of the Yankee coaches were ejected.
The Tigers will open a series against the White Sox in Chicago tonight. Justin Verlander will start against Miguel González.
The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and begin a series against the Dodgers in Los Angeles tonight. Chase Anderson will pitch against Kenta Maeda.
The Cubs and Cardinals both lost yesterday, so Milwaukee now trails Chicago by three games in the National League Central Division race. Saint Louis remains four-and-a-half back.
