Fundraising Continues For New Calumet Ball Fields

An effort to build a new softball field in Calumet is underway.

Called the “Field of Dreams” Project, the ball field would be built at the Calumet Legion Field on M203, just outside of town.

The field would serve Calumet High School, Keweenaw Little League and Northern Chill travel softball.

The teams currently use the fields by the George Gipp Arena in Laurium.

Co-organizer Matt Vertin says the teams are currently limited in how much they can practice, not only because of the weather, but because of poor field conditions.

Phase 1 of the project will consist of the new field plus fences, dugouts, drainage, water and sewer.

Phase 2 includes a concession stand, pavilion, bathroom and storage area.

The final phase will involve building a second field similar to the first.

The estimated cost of phase one is about $55,000, and co-organizer Joel Rastello says a generous donation by the Campioni family of $25,000 means they are ready to begin.
