This week, youth hockey players attended Tech’s Hockey School camp at the MacInnes Student Arena.
The players practiced their skating skills, learned puck handling and even played a few scrimmage games.
A special guest instructor made an appearance at this year’s camp: Hancock native and Michigan Tech Hockey alumni Tanner Kero returned to the Copper Country to give back to a hockey school he attended several times.
“I think it’s great for the kids to get a week or two weeks or whatever it might be in the summer just to kind of come in, learn a few things, have some fun, hang out with some buddies, and then kind of get away from the beach a little bit and work on hockey,” said Kero. “I love the summers up here and so to be a little kid going to this camp when I was growing up to now be able to teach little kids and have fun and see how much fun they’re having. It’s been fun.”
Kero played for the Huskies from 2011 to 2015 and was the WCHA Player of the Year, Scoring Leader and Outstanding Student Athlete of the Year following his last season.
He now plays professional hockey with the Chicago Blackhawks, appearing in 47 games with six goals and 10 assists during the 2016-2017 season.
