The Houghton County Board of Commissioners are considering putting a millage proposal to address jail overcrowding on the November ballot.
Commissioner Tim Palosaari suggested either 1 mill for 10 years or 0.5 mills for 20 years, to raise $4 million to $5 million for an addition to the current jail.
He says they could use the parking deck area of the courthouse and find additional parking elsewhere.
Many questions remain unanswered, such as whether an addition would be adequate and could the current jail be brought up to code.
The jail population has been at or above maximum capacity for much of the year.
The county has been unsuccessful in the past to get voter approval for a new jail.
The board is holding a special meeting on Wednesday, July 26th at noon to discuss the millage.
The deadline to submit ballot proposals to make the November election is next month.
