The State of Michigan says the Copper Country has too many judges.
In a recent report by the State Court Administrative Office, it is recommended that a probate court district be created to cover both Houghton and Keweenaw Counties and to eliminate through attrition the Keweenaw County Probate Court judgeship.
As an alternative, the state recommends the reduction through attrition of one district court judgeship.
Houghton, Keweenaw and Baraga Counties share District and Circuit Court judges.
The report states that the total caseload of the courts has decreased from over 4,000 a year in 2005 to less than 3,000 in 2016.
In 2015, the state recommended eliminating the district court judgeship through attrition and giving district court authority to the probate judges.
Any recommendations by the report would have to be approved by the state legislature.
