Father & Son Share Their Book “Charlie 906”

Hard to imagine any ten year-old giving up video games for an entire summer, but Keaton Snell did it in order to finish a book with his father.

The book is called “Charlie 906” and Snell, with the help of his father, Dominic, worked to finish the entire book last summer.

Dominic is originally from the Houghton area, but while living in Texas, the pair discovered that many people had not heard of a pasty, much less have eaten one.

The father and son duo read the story and answered questions about “Charlie 906” at the Portage Lake District Library last night.

Co-author and illustrator Keaton said he enjoyed working together with his dad to write the book.

“It’s about a crow named Charlie. He discovers this delicious mystery food with his pal, Mooorie the Moose, and Charlie goes around the Upper Peninsula and finds out about the pasty and all kinds of other facts and stuff,” said Keaton, who co-authored and illustrated the book. “It came about in Galveston, Texas because we missed the U.P. and pasties. My dad actually had a pet crow named Charlie when he was a child and 906 is the area code for up here, so we just came up with the idea.”

After the reading, attendees colored characters from “Charlie 906” and ate pasties from Suomi Restaurant.

The pair self-published the book about six months ago and are hoping to introduce the story to more stores in the U.P.

“Charlie 906” is currently sold at Book World in Houghton and Copper World in Calumet. Another way to purchase a copy is on the “Charlie 906” Facebook page.
