Fifteen high school students from the Detroit area spent last week in the Upper Peninsula exploring natural resources, careers and engineering.
The group traveled to Michigan Tech to talk with current students and meet with different departments to learn about everything from mechanical engineering to forestry.
Trip Organizer Michael Reed said that this is an opportunity for the students to have unique experiences, from crossing the Mackinac Bridge to seeing a bear’s den in the wilderness.
“It was an opportunity and that opportunity allowed us to provide an opportunity for our kids. We always say that ‘you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink,’ so when we bring the kids up here, we’re providing them with an opportunity to learn more about careers, first of all, and second, even about college life,” said Trip Organizer Michael Reed.
This is the third year of the program, which is coordinated by the Michigan Tech Center for Science and Environmental Outreach.
The trip was funded by contributions from the School of Forestry Resources, College of Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Housing and Residential Life.
