Tigers Shut Down Mariners
David Price outdueled Felix Martinez, and the Tigers beat the Mariners 4-1 yesterday. Price pitched seven dominant innings, giving up just a run on two hits. He ran into trouble in the eighth, loading the bases with two walks and a single. Manager Brad Ausmus visited the mound, but left Price in the game. Price responded by striking out former Tiger Austin Jackson, and getting Dustin Ackley to hit a weak grounder to shortstop. Joe Nathan gave up a run in the ninth, but earned his 25th save. The Detroit offense scratched out a run against Hernandez in the second inning. Nick Castellanos hit a solo homer in the fourth. They added two insurance runs in the seventh on RBI singles by J.D. Martinez and Castellanos.
The Tigers host the Mariners again this afternoon. Robbie Ray will start against Chris Young. Hear the first pitch at 1:08 on FM 99.3 and AM 1400, WCCY.
Kansas City lost yesterday… so the Tigers are now a half-game back in the American League Central Division.
Tigers’ outfielder Andy Dirks singled and drove in a run, as he resumed his rehab assignment yesterday with Toledo. Dirks is working his way back from back surgery this spring. His progress was derails by a hamstring pull last week. He was replaced by a pinch-runner after his hit in the fifth inning.
The Tigers have called up reliever Jim Johnson from Toledo. Johnson saved more than 100 game the past two seasons for the Orioles. He signed with the A’s this season, but struggled with his control so badly that he was released a few weeks ago. Detroit signed him, and he has looked much better in some tune-up appearances with the Mud Hens. To make room for Johnson, Melvin Mercedes was sent back to Toledo.
Brewers Hold On To Beat Dodgers
The Brewers handed Dodgers’ ace Clayton Kershaw his first loss since May 28th yesterday, hitting two home runs en route to a 3-2 victory. Kershaw pitched well, striking out 11 over nine innings. His only mistakes were hit out of the park by Ryan Braun and Carlos Gomez. Yovani Gallardo gave up just one run on six hits over eight innings. Francisco Rodriguez gave up a leadoff homer to Matt Kemp in the ninth, but then retired the next three batters to earn his 38th save.
The Brewers conclude that set at Los Angeles this afternoon. Wily Peralta will start against Dan Haren.
Saint Louis won, and Pittsburgh lost, so Milwaukee leads the National League Central Division by two games over the Cardinals, and three-and-a-half over the Pirates.
Packers Pound Rams
Aaron Rodgers led two long scoring drives to open the game, and the Packers defeated the Rams 21-7 in NFL exhibition play last night. Rodgers threw for one touchdown. He completed a second touchdown pass that was nullified by a penalty, and Green Bay had to settle for a field goal. Matt Flynn threw for a TD, and Scott Tolzien also had a potential touchdown pass nullified by a penalty. The only downside of the evening was the 22 penalties that were called… mostly on defense… as officials began implementing stricter rules enforcement as mandated by the league.
The Packers host the Raiders Friday night. The Lions entertain the Jaguars Friday evening.
Gauthier Repeats at Great Deer Chase
Tyler Gauthier from Ishpeming won his second-straight 28-mile Great Deer Chase mountain bike race on Saturday. Gauthier finished the course on the Swedetown Trails with a time of 1:50:55. That was two minutes faster than Pete Karinen from Painesdale, who was also last year’s runner-up. Third-place finisher Colby Lash of Marquette was more than eight minutes back. Nicole Alexander of Marquette was the top women’s finisher. In the 15-mile event, Todd Tollefson from L’Anse took first place, with a time of 1:02:24. Jason Jilbert of Marquette finished second… a little more than four minutes off the pace, and just ahead of third-place finisher Dennis Jensen from Rockford. Hannah Derby from Ishpeming was the top women’s finisher.
