Today is Hancock Public School’s Superintendent Monica Healy’s last day before retirement.
Healy has been an educator for 34 years. During that time, she taught sixth grade, served as Hancock Middle School’s principle for six years and combined those duties with the superintendent job for six years.
Healy says what she’ll remember most is seeing her students graduate.
“One of the things I love most about superintendent is graduation day. I love giving the diplomas and watching the kids, you know, that I knew when they came in years ago, usually when they came into sixth grade, sometimes before. So, giving diplomas, graduation day is always a highlight,” said Healy.
The school district is in the process of interviewing Healy’s replacement and have narrowed down the list to five candidates.
Those include Hancock principal Kipp Beaudoin and Chassell Township Superintendent Howard Parmentier, as well as three candidates from outside the area.
Whoever becomes the new superintendent, Healy has some parting advice for them.
“Keep a sense of humor. You know, things are tough in public education right now. We have a fantastic group of superintendents in the area. Lean on people, let them help you and just keep an open mind,” she said.
The interviews will be conducted July 10th and 11th and the public is encouraged to attend.
