It’s quite unusual to find beaver dams anywhere but near the water, but at the Portage Lake District Library, they are found in the Community room.
Families gathered to learn from Ranger Lori Honrath about the behaviors and habitat of Isle Royale beavers and even made their own beaver faces.
Honroth said these programs provide a fun learning opportunity for all. “It’s a good activity for parents to bring their children to during the summer and it’s important for kids to learn about our local wildlife and history and have a fun activity to go to during the summer.”
Attendees had the opportunity to create their own beaver dams out of chocolate frosting and pretzels, even if some did turn the activity into snack time.
This program is just one in a series held at the library in conjunction with Isle Royale National Park and the Keweenaw Park Rangers.
The programs are meant to teach the community about the area’s natural resources beginning at a young age. Honroth, said “Our wildlife is for all of us here and our history is our heritage. We really enjoy bringing this to the public.”
Isle Royale Summer Programs are held every Tuesday at 1 p.m. until the end of August.
