Buck Farmer couldn’t make it through the third inning, as the Tampa Bay Rays ripped the Detroit Tigers 9-1 yesterday. Farmer gave up two runs in the first inning, then surrendered Steven Souza Jr.’s first major-league grand slam in the third. Detroit’s only score came on a first-inning RBI single by Justin Upton.
The Tigers have lost eight of their last 12 games, and open a series at Seattle tonight. Anibal Sanchez will return from Toledo to start against Sam Gaviglio. Pregame coverage will begin at 9:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
To make room for Sanchez on the roster, Farmer was sent back to the Mud Hens.
Jimmy Nelson went the distance, as the Milwaukee Brewers edged the San Diego Padres 2-1 yesterday. Nelson allowed just six hits, and struck out 10. Hernán Pérez and Manny Piña hit solo home runs for the Crew.
The Brewers open a four-game home set against the Pirates tonight. Matt Garza will pitch against Gerrit Cole.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings have chosen to leave Petr Mrazek unprotected in the NHL expansion draft. Mrazek began last season as the team’s starting goalie, but lost his job because of inconsistent play. Goalie Jimmy Howard was placed on the protected list. The new Las Vegas Golden Knights will select one player from each team in the expansion draft, to create their roster. Their list will be revealed on Wednesday.
