The Detroit Tigers scored five runs in the fourth inning, and five more in the fifth, and cruised past the Tampa Bay Rays 13-4 Friday night. Ian Kinsler and Alex Avila homered. Nicholas Castellanos drove in four runs. Daniel Norris gave up eight hits and three runs over six innings, and got the win.
The Tigers host the Rays again this afternoon. Michael Fulmer will start against Chris Archer. Pregame coverage will begin at 3:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez was sent to the hospital after feeling dizzy during Thursday night’s game. He has been diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat, and placed on the disabled list while further tests are run. John Hicks has been called up from Toledo to fill in.
Eric Thames’ homer in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-5 victory over the San Diego Padres last night. Travis Shaw, Keon Broxton and Manny Piña also homered for Milwaukee. The Crew fell behind early, as the Padres scored four runs in the first inning on an error, a walk, and two home runs. Those were the only two hits starter Junior Guerra gave up over six innings. Jared Hughes got the win in relief.
The Brewers host the San Diego Padres again this afternoon. Chase Anderson will pitch against Dinelson Lamet.

In Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball play last night, Mattile Rock and dock earned a pair of victories…
– Mattila defeated Superior National Bank 4-1 in the first game of the evening. Mel Baker pitched for Mattila. Sisters Larissa Anderson, Adena Anderson and Rosalie Anderson combined for the loss for SNB. Baker had two doubles for Mattila Rock and Dock. Adena Anderson had two singles for SNB.
– In the evening’s second contest, Mattila came from behind to edge Calumet Golf Club/Loading Zone 10-9. Shantel Lorenz drove home the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh inning. Marty Jahfetson was the winning pitcher and Ellie Djerf took the loss. Darla Mensch hit two doubles and a single for Mattila. Jada Riutta had two singles for Calumet Golf Club/The Loading Zone.
NHL
NHL teams have until 5:00 this afternoon to submit the list of players they’ll protect in the upcoming expansion draft. The lists will be revealed by the league tomorrow morning. The new Las Vegas Knights will then select 30 players who are not protected as the core of their first roster. They’re selections will be announced Wednesday evening.
NBA
Reggie Bullock of the Detroit Pistons has been suspended for five games after violating the NBA’s substance abuse policy. Details of the violation were not revealed. Bullock is a restricted free agent. He has seen limited action with Detroit over the past two seasons because of injuries.
Finlandia
Finlandia University has announced a partnership with radio station 99.3 The Lift to broadcast selected athletic events next season. The agreement calls for around two dozen broadcasts, which will cover a dozen Lions teams. The schedule will be announced in August. Finlandia Athletic Director Curtis Wittenburg called the agreement “a great opportunity not only for our athletic department, but the university as a whole. Having a voice for Finlandia athletics is another piece to the growth of our department.” Games will also be broadcast on AM 1400.
